Even though recreational cannabis is now legal in California, theCoachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has announced that it will not allow the plant at its outdoor music festival, which ironically takes place in mid-April—the same time frame as the cannabis industry’s unofficial holiday on April 20.

Coachella, California’s 19-year-old music festival takes place over the course two separate weekends. Last year, over 99,000 people attended the festival daily over its six days of performances. However, Coachella’s promoter Goldenvoice has just said no to the allowance of cannabis and cannabis products on site at the festival, which takes place at Empire Polo Field in Indio, California.

“The promoter has a standing right to the property, and they can determine what can and cannot be brought onto the premises,” Indio Police Sgt. Dan Marshallsaid to the Los Angeles Daily News.

However, that means that hundreds of thousands will also not be able to take advantage of California’s newly legal recreational cannabis laws, which allow those who are 21 and over to have a chance to carry a gram of cannabis and use it in private areas where allowed.

Under the “Frequently Asked Questions” page, the site says, “Sorry bro. Marijuana or marijuana products aren’t allowed inside the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Even in 2018 and beyond. If that changes we will update this answer.”

Cannabis was also not allowed on festival groundslast year either, not even for attendees who carry medical cannabis cards. Last year, “amnesty boxes” at the entrances provided by security where cannabis or illegal substances can be deposited, no questions asked. In April, the spinoff cannabis festival Kushella was cancelled by its own organizers.

This doesn’t mean that cannabis won’t be present in the local area, however. Last year, multiple cannabis brands danced around the edges of Coachella with private parties and even the sale of cannabis floral crowns.
