Why is Smoking Weed Giving me Anxiety Now?
Author: Sarah  04/11/2017 - 08:00:00

You love smoking weed and you’ve been doing it for years. Now all of a sudden smoking weed is giving you anxiety. Quelle horreur! Why is this happening to you now? Is there anything you can do about it? Do you have to quit smoking weed now?

As a disclaimer, I am not a medical doctor. I am not giving you medical advice. I am giving you friendly advice and an educated guess. This column is for entertainment purposes only. If you are experiencing anxiety from using cannabis, you should consult a doctor, especially if you are taking other medications because cannabis can cause negative interactions with other medications.

You Could be Smoking the Wrong Strain

Some cannabis strains are more prone to giving users anxiety than others. Typically you will see these types of side effects with sativas. This is because they are more psychoactive because they typically contain more THC. If you’ve been getting anxiety from your usual strains, you may want to switch to an indica. Indica strains, like OG Kush or Blueberry, are a lot more relaxing than their sativa counterparts. Switching to an indica may be the simplest way to cure your anxiety.

Your Body Chemistry is Changing

When did you start smoking weed? I started smoking in my early teens. I know now that this wasn’t a smart decision. You should not do mind altering substances until your brain stops developing, that is when you reach the age of 25. Your brain chemistry is still changing prior to this age, and it is highly likely that you could develop anxiety at a later age, especially if you’re a regular cannabis user.

Your Weed Might be Too Strong

If your herb is suddenly giving you anxiety, it could be a case of you smoking stuff that’s too potent for you (yes this can happen). It may help you to switch to a lower THC strain, or a CBD strain like Charlotte’s Web. You should definitely do this if it’s been awhile since you’ve smoked and you’re just coming back into the fold. Always start out low when coming back from a tolerance break!

Is this Permanent?

There’s no real definitive answer to this question because every person is different. More than likely, no this isn’t permanent. It just depends on the steps you take to take care of your anxiety, what medications you’re taking, the amount of stress in your life. This is why it’s important to talk to your doctor whenever something like this happens to you. It most likely isn’t permanent, but it could be.

Do I have to Quit Smoking Weed for Good Now?

I don’t know. You might have to. It would be a good idea for you to quit smoking weed until you can figure out what is causing your anxiety. You won’t want to, but it would probably be the best thing for you. Do you have to quit smoking forever? Not necessarily. Once you get your anxiety under control, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to smoke up again. Of course, if smoking once again triggers your anxiety, then you should of course quit again. Talk to your doctor.
