Port Hueneme City Council Moves Forward With Licensed Commercial Medical Cannabis

Port Hueneme will soon become the first city in Ventura County to license medical cannabis cultivation and sales as a medical provider. On May 22, the Port Hueneme City Council approved the first reading of a medical cannabis ordinance. On June 5, the council approved the second reading. The cannabis ordinance is a result of at least seven public hearings on the topic with heavy support from the community.

The city leadership applauds the ordinance and how it can benefit medical cannabis in the area. “The implementation of this ordinance could translate to hundreds of thousand dollars to our city each year,” Mayor Thomas Figg wrote in the Ventura County Reporter. “There is no other use of property within the city that could raise this kind of money in the immediate future. We owe it to our residents, businesses and property owners to exhaust every potential source of revenue that does not entail new taxes.”

On June 12, an informational workshop was held at the Oceanview Pavilion to discuss the sale and cultivation of medical cannabis in Port Hueneme. A municipal service yard is already being considered for a commercial medical cannabis facility. “The topic will be the city’s intended sale of the Public Works Yard property at 746 Industrial Way,” Mayor Pro Tem Jim Hensley wrote in an email obtained by CULTURE. “Whoever is selected as the buyer, it will almost certainly be a cannabis-related business, so the city staff want to inform neighbors in the surrounding area about what types of business would and would not be allowed there, and what impacts they would have on the neighborhood.”

Per the ordinance, all potential business facilities must undergo a public hearing to consider the concerns of neighboring businesses and residents. The city of Port Hueneme, with the help of medical cannabis businesses, is in a position to raise money that no other industry is capable of raising.
